American Legion Walk for Veterans

Event Description

The purpose of this event is to raise public awareness of important issues facing veterans and their families and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 46. This year we will be joined by the newly established Veterans Coalition of the Crystal Coast (VCCC). The VCCC is a coalition of Veteran organizations, community service providers, and personnel dedicated to the prevention of Veteran suicide. We will also have counselors from the Jacksonville, NC VA Vet Center. The Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Centers across the country provide a broad range of counseling, outreach, and referral services to combat Veterans and their families. The opening ceremony of the Awareness Walk on June 22 will begin at 10:30am. and will include comments from the Post Commander, GySgt John Sotirkys (USMC), and Pine Knoll Shores Mayor Ken Jones as well as the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. The walk will begin immediately following the opening ceremony at approximately 10:45. The length of the walk is approximately one mile and will start and end at Garner Park. Following the walk, registered participants are invited to stay for a free picnic lunch and drawing for door prizes and our grand prize drawing for a fishing kayak. Also, for as long as the food holds out, non-registered visitors may join in the picnic lunch for a small donation. Anyone, including non-registered visitors, may purchase door prize tickets for $3 each and/or purchase raffle tickets for the grand prize fishing kayak for $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Door prize and kayak raffle tickets will be on sale at the park beginning at 9am and continue until the drawing begins.
