John Lee Abersold
John Abersold joined NCDMVA on November 4, 2024, and assumed the role of Director of Veteran Services on November 10, 2025. With a strong commitment to serving veterans, John brings extensive experience in veteran advocacy, outreach, and claims representation.
Prior to his current role, John served as the Suwannee County Veterans Services Officer/Director, where he coordinated veteran events, outreach initiatives, and claims processing. He also worked as Training Coordinator for the County Veteran Service Officer Association of Florida, organizing state and federal training and accreditation programs for service officers. At NCDMVA, John previously managed the State Service Office, representing veterans in BVA appeals and serving as a liaison between clients, the VA, and state and county representatives.
A medically retired United States Marine Corps veteran, John’s diverse background also includes roles as a high school biology teacher and management positions in agriculture and livestock production.
John holds a Juris Master in Health Care Law and Regulation from Florida State University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from West Virginia University.
Outside of work, John enjoys homesteading, gardening, and caring for his family’s animals, which include chickens, dogs, cats, and horses. He and his wife, Dr. Cheryl Abersold, DNP, host foreign exchange students and love traveling with their five children—Karley, Clay, Colt, Emmy, and Sutton. His hobbies include horseback riding, camping, kayaking, living history events, and visiting theme parks and beaches.
