NCDMVA Secretary Walter E. Gaskin, LtGen USMC, Ret., and Gen. Michael X. Garrett, Commanding General FORSCOM, along with other panel members, will discuss the generations of African Americans who paved the way for today’s African American servicemembers who now serve in some of the most predominate and respected offices within the U.S. Armed Forces.

The NC Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (NCDMVA) will join NMPMA, Inc. NC Triad-Triangle Chapter 38, and Tau Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at the North Carolina Museum of History to pay homage to the late, John Thompson, a veteran who made history as a Montford Point Marine during WWII.

Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall previously accepted the donation of a ceremonial veteran urn cover on behalf of the State of North Carolina and presented it today to Walter Gaskin, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (NCDMVA), during a ceremony at Western Carolina State Veteran Cemetery in Black Mountain.

This temporary display, on view throughout Black History Month, is a collaboration between NCDMVA, NC Museum of History, Elizabeth City State University School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and State Archives of NC to collect, preserve, and display NC’s Black veterans’ stories for future generations.
