RALEIGH, N.C. - Whether you are looking to explore the outdoors, learn more about North Carolina history or get an up close view of wildlife this Memorial Day weekend, the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR) offers a variety of attractions for every family to enjoy. Many of the sites offer discounts to active military personnel and their families on this special day honoring the armed forces as well as year-round.   Below is a roundup of NCDNCR attractions, including operating hours and discount information:
Governor Pat McCrory and Secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs General Cornell Wilson today welcomed James Prosser, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), as the Assistant Secretary for Veterans Affairs. Prosser has extensive experience serving North Carolina veterans as Director of Veterans Services for Mecklenburg County and President of the North Carolina Association of County Veteran Service Officers.  Prosser served for 27 years in the United States Air Force and held various mental health service positions, including Superintendent of Mental Health Services.
Raleigh, NC- A new report released by the North Carolina’s Division of Veterans Affairs (NCDVA) shows a 70% growth in State Veteran Service locations and a 1$ billion increase in compensation awards to North Carolina Veterans since 2013.  Additionally, the report reflects Governor Pat McCrory’s mission of “Making North Carolina the Most Veteran Friendly State in America,” a mission the Governor charged the agency with two years ago.
This week marks 25 years since the United States, as part of a 34-nation coalition, drove Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi army out of Kuwait, returning that nation’s sovereignty and reshaping the U.S. military to the force it is today. Governor McCrory, U.S. Service Members and North Carolina Veterans joined Secretary Cornell Wilson, and Secretary Susan Kluttz, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources in honoring the 17 North Carolina servicemen who gave their lives during the war.
Governor Pat McCrory released the following statement in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The 74th anniversary of the attack is tomorrow, Dec. 7.
